Hilary Eastmure is an Independent incumbent Nanaimo City Councillor running for re-election to council in the October 17, 2026 general local election. Originally from Elora, Ontario, she moved to Nanaimo in 2013 to work as a radio reporter with 91.7 Coast FM, where she regularly covered city council and built a strong understanding of the issues facing residents. Her journalism work led her into politics; she now serves as a caseworker in a Member of Parliament's office, helping people navigate federal bureaucracy and advocating on their behalf. Elected to council in 2022, she has focused on livability, accessibility, and sustainability — including active transportation and transit, net-zero housing and retrofits, parks and the urban forest, watershed protection, renter stability, mental-health and opioid-crisis advocacy, Truth and Reconciliation (Call #57), and transparent, accountable city hall communication. She has also been Festival Director of the Vancouver Island Short Film Festival and Bookstore Manager at Literacy Central Vancouver Island.
