Ian Thorpe is the longest-serving current Nanaimo City Councillor, first elected in 2014 and now seeking a fourth term. A third-generation Nanaimoite, he retired in 2010 after a 35-year career as a teacher and school administrator in Nanaimo, and has written the community sports column 'The Thorpe Report' in the Nanaimo News Bulletin for over 45 years. On council he has chaired the Public Safety Committee and the Parks, Recreation and Wellness Committee, served on the Regional District of Nanaimo Board — including two terms as RDN Board Chair (2018–2020) — and chaired the Nanaimo Regional Hospital District Board from 2018–2024, where he advocates for a cardiac cath lab and a new patient tower at the regional hospital.
